About the Native Plant Garden Tour
The Theodore Payne Native Plant Garden Tour is a proud tradition of more than a decade. It is the Theodore Payne Foundation’s largest outreach event of the year, showcasing gardens that, in addition to beauty, demonstrate watershed protection and resilience ecology. Proceeds from the Tour benefit the Foundation’s non-profit native plant nursery and education programs – California treasures since 1960.
Gardens must be within Los Angeles County.
Plant coverage must be least 50% native and include no invasive non-native species.
Each garden should be a labor of love in harmony with Southern California’s climate, soil, natural vegetation and native wildlife.
Gardens are reviewed with the following questions in mind:
“If this was someone’s first time viewing a native garden, does it leave them with a positive impression?”
“Are the majority of focal plants in this garden native to California?”
The garden application period will be open August 1, 2013, through October 15, 2013.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the application period.
Applications submitted outside of the August 1-October 15 cannot be considered.
Garden selection will be completed by November 30, 2013.
Gardens meeting the tour criteria are selected for overall impact and outstanding attributes. Included in the selection process is a desire to represent a variety of geographical locations, styles, innovative ecological features, sizes and levels of maturity.
The 2014 tour will include 35-40 gardens, including new and returning gardens.
Note, Saturday and Sunday garden order will be different from 2013 tour: Gardens in Los Angeles, the Westside and South Bay will open on Saturday, April 5. Gardens in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys will be open on Sunday, April 6.
